The History Behind Lancaster Music
Company
The year 1999 marked the 50th
Anniversary of Lancaster Music Company, located at Lancaster Center in Gainesville, GA.
Established in 1949 by J. Wendell and Mary Lancaster, the business is now operated by
their son, Joey.
In 1973, at the of 19, Joey became owner of
Lancaster Piano and Organ Company while studying business administration at Brenau
University. Two years later, he purchased the lot opposite Lakeshore Mall,
constructing the first phase of Lakeshore Village Shopping Center. Lancaster Piano
relocated to the center in 1976 as Lakeshore Village grew in two phases, housing 15
businesses. Wendell and Mary continued operation of Lancaster Jewelry, located in
downtown Gainesville, until their retirement in 1982.
Joey's involvement in the Hall County business community grew, as he helped
organize Georgia First Bank in 1984. He continues to serve on its Board of
Directors. A long-time member of the Gainesville Airport Advisory board, he served as its chairman for 10 years. He also serves on the Brenau University
Advisory Board.
Lancaster Center, part of Lakeshore Village Phase 3, was developed after additional
land was purchased in 1985. The spacious new home of Lancaster Music Company opened
the following year. Mary worked as bookkeeper for the business until her
death in July of 1998. Joey's wife, Lynn, has also been an integral
part of the business, along with their two children, John and Emily.
The National Association of Music Merchants voted Lancaster Music Company to be
among the country's top-five music store designs in 1989.
